I haven’t had this bag long, but it’s already been on a few domestic trips and performed great. Love the look, materials, and build quality, which cannot be faulted. The only downside is the laptop storage area. It suits, but the internal material isn’t fixed into position, so placing the laptop can be tricky. The Velcro retaining strap doesn’t help either, as pulling it drags the inner lining along with it. The valuables pocket has the same issue, with the zipper pulling the lining rather than staying put.

I’ve been buying pieces I want to last as heirloom quality items, and this bag is now one of them. Looking forward to taking it to Finland and Sweden later this year.

Hopefully I can attach pictures! It looks fantastic. You have to "wear it in" a bit at the start because it's a bit rigid. It does fit a MacBook pro 16" (aka the biggest one), have a picture of it for reference. With the black colour I was not sure about until I saw it, the texture helps it looks great.

The outer zips can be noisy when walking fast (hearing a clink kind of noise)

MAD13 Roll Top Rucksack

Thanks to the Jack Stillman team for a first rate and practical product.

This roll top pack is hard wearing and useful as a day pack or for overnight hiking in the bush.

There’s plenty of room for work books or devices; and equally useful for camping gear. The Stillman poncho fits with extra room for other camping gear.

Near perfect but falls short

I’m actually leaving almost the same review as Shauns. Today is my first time actually using the bag for 1 overnight stay and unfortunately the leather strap isn’t long enough unless the bag is completely rolled down, near halving the capacity of the bag. If I could swap it for a longer strap I would but its stitched in.

Unless you want to have a loose strap with a clip flopping around you need to only half fill it. Realistically the bag is only about 45cm tall with full functionality.

The bag is definitely built to last, extremely high quality but the design is lacking functionality. If i had known this prior I wouldn’t have made the purchase.

Thanks for your honest review Joel and thanks for your purchase. The MAD-13 is described as it was designed, a rolltop backpack. The rolled top is specifically intended to seal the top of the bag by making it extremely difficult for rain or dust etc to get into the bag.

As such the leather strap is intended to hold the rolled top in place with a single belt. If you attempt to fill it all the way to the top, it won’t seal as designed and the weight and balance ratios will be wrong. It’s not comfortable to wear the bag this way. This is why we added Molle (the webbing lines) on the side and the lashing squares on the base. These give you more space and options than just filling the space that is intended to be rolled. This all being said, you can use the extra space in a pinch if you need to - but only as a short term solution. I completed a two day climbed up Mt Kinabalu in Borneo with the bag in December 23. It held wet and cold weather gear, snacks, first aid, water etc. Note I used the lash squares on the base to carry a rolled rain jacket and a water bottle holder (KP H2O releasing soon) on the side. Outstanding quality and looks awesome

The Mad13 rucksack is such good quality I have no worries about it wearing through or breaking on whatever adventure we’re on. The canvas is super tough, the brass is very solid and the leather is strong without being overly thick. The molle lets me add extra pockets/water bottles as needed. And it’s got that vintage vibe I love. I’m eyeing off the Jack Stillman poncho which will strap nicely to the bottom of the Mad13.

Built to last but needs a slight improvement to be perfect

I have 5 or 6 products from Jack and i will buy more even though i have a small design issue with this backpack unless i am missing something.
It is advertised as being versatile in its size with its roll top feature, however, this is what i have a problem with. Check out my pics.
There is really only the "rolled down" position that can be used effectively, the strap when fully adjusted to be as long as it can go, will only go around a certain size setting of the rolled down section.
If you fil this pack up beyond that max size, the strap cant go over it and clip on, you then cant use the strap and have to let it hang down. Now I have tried this and when the strap is hanging down it digs into your back.
It needs a longer adjustable strap that can go over the fully rolled out top to maximize all the available space, as it is, the extra space cant be used. You cant fill this pack up and use it as a backpack, the strap buckle will hurt your back, just as a carry bag
Im still ok with the purchase but if i had known this fact before purchasing it, would i have still bought it? Maybe

I can't argue with this review. The MAD-13 belt was never designed to be able to go over the un-rolled top. But as a user of this bag myself I admit to a few occasions I have filled it to capacity and then have to deal with the belt and brass clip. I tend to clip it onto the top zip but I agree that's a clunky fix. I will take this onboard and implement a fix as soon as I can. One suggestion is to add a loop or ring to the top zip pull that the brass dog clip can clip on. Thanks for your honest feedback. Jarrod Stillman
